How does Direct To Film Printing Work?
DTF printing uses a printer to apply inks onto special PET film (polyethylene terephthalate). An adhesive powder is then applied to the wet ink and cured. Finally, a heat press is used to transfer the design from the film onto the desired fabric.
DTF printing is quickly becoming popular in digital textile printing. It works well on various materials, including cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics. It is an excellent choice for businesses seeking durable prints with clear visibility for uniforms.
This method provides versatility similar to vinyl or transfer printing, but with enhanced durability. Unlike sublimation, DTF printing requires specific inks for proper adhesion and print quality.
The DTF Printing Process
The DTF printing process involves six precise steps to achieve a quality print.
- Printing on film: Your design is first printed onto a PET film using a DTF printing machine. A mirror image of the design is created, followed by a layer of white ink on top.
- Powder application and melting: Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet white ink on the film. This powder is then cured in an oven, activating the adhesive for transfer.
- Pre-pressing the garment: The fabric is pre-pressed to smooth it and remove moisture. This prepares the garment for optimal design transfer.
- Transferring the design: The film with your design is placed on the pre-pressed garment in a heat press. This ensures the design adheres correctly to the fabric.
- Cooling and peeling: The garment and film must cool down before the film is carefully removed. This step ensures the design’s quality and adhesion.
- Post-press (optional): An additional pressing can be done for an even better finish and increased print durability. A thin sheet of kraft paper is used to protect the print.
Benefits of DTF Printing
DTF printing offers a number of advantages for custom garment projects. Here are our top seven:
- No pre-treatment of the garment is needed
- Supports a wide range of colours and detailed designs
- Works on various materials like cotton, polyester, and blends
- Allows for flexible design placement, including challenging areas
- Produces clear, solid colours and sharp whites
- Achieves a high level of detail in the print
- Ideal for complex garments such as hoodies and technical t-shirts
Among digital textile printing techniques, DTF stands out. Compared to DTG printing, it offers clearer white ink and is suitable for a broader range of fabrics. It’s especially effective for garments that are challenging to print.
For concerns about DTF vs screen printing quality, DTF often provides sharper detail and colour on complex designs.
Considerations for DTF Printing
While DTF printing offers many benefits, there are three things to consider.
- The print may have a slight plastic-like feel on the fabric
- Creating smooth colour gradients directly into the garment colour is not possible
- Production time can be longer, potentially making it more costly than DTG for some projects
Other Printing Techniques
If you’re unsure whether DTF printing is right for you, we also offer a number of other printing techniques to suit your needs.
Screen Printing: Ideal for larger orders, typically 50 units or more, due to its cost-effectiveness at scale. It produces high-quality prints that are durable and long-lasting.
Direct to Garment (DTG) Printing: Perfect for smaller quantities, usually under 50 units, because there are no set-up fees. This makes it a more economical and faster option for quick turnaround times.
Heat Transfer: A versatile method that allows for detailed designs on various materials.
Embroidery: A sophisticated and highly durable finish, often outliving the garment itself. While it may be a more expensive option for larger designs, it provides a professional look, perfect for corporate wear and uniforms.
Embossed: Creates a raised, tactile design on the fabric, adding a unique texture and premium feel to your garments.
